PRESENTATION
We have defined health as tension towards harmony. Exploring this concept, in this XX International Conference of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care we will address the beginning of this tension, a beginning that marks health throughout life – the human genome. We see it is an organising structural element of the individual and hereditary features of the human body. It involves the whole set of genes but it goes beyond this and concerns all the elements which, together with genes, constitute the original energy that is present in a virtual form, an energy which, in turn, is the constituent mystery of the life of the human person.
This is a very broad topic and to a large extent subject to new research and discovery. Our aims are modest and we will try to study this subject solely from the specific perspective of health, which, for that matter, is an all-embracing reality. We will lay stress on the therapeutic aspect.
The study of the human genome will proceed according to our usual method: we will begin with a vision of the genome in the light of the Word of God, and from this we will develop our exploration of it in three stages: Reality, Illumination, Action.
In the first part of our conference we will consider the current reality of genetics, genomic studies and post-genomic studies, chromosome aberrations and congenital disorders, monogenetic, polygenetic and polyfactorial illnesses, genetic predisposition to cancer and to late-onset diseases, medical care for patients with these diseases and their families, prenatal and pre-implantation diagnosis of genetic diseases, the genetic screening of populations, and gene therapy. We will consider the prospects for development in the field of human genetic diseases from the point of view of the World Health Organisation and we will present human genetics and its international juridical status, genetic research, and international cooperation.
In the stage addressed to Illumination, we will reflect on the following subjects through the application of the Word of God to the reality studied in the first part of the conference: the historical process of human genetics, human genetics in the light of the Word of God, the ethics of medical genetics, the path of liberal eugenics and the ethics of medical consultancy in the field of genetics. In our traditional inter-religious dialogue we will then address the application of the knowledge of human genetics according to Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, as well as genetics according to the thought of post-modernity.
In the stage addressed to Action we will examine genetics and the new culture, the pastoral vision of genetic research, medical genetics and ethical committees in hospitals, law and genetics, society and genetic diseases, economics and genetics, education and the updating of pastoral workers in the field of genetics, and the prevention of genetic diseases from the point of view of pastoral care.
As it is clear from the names of the specialists who will speak on the subjects that have been listed, these are highly qualified people who come from different parts of the world and who have been invited specifically within an interdisciplinary framework in order to be able to obtain a dialogue of high stature that will be useful in directing our world in relation to this matter, in which, indeed, the future is already awakening.

Présentation
La santé a été définie comme tension vers l’harmonie. En vue d’approfondir ce concept au cours de cette XX è Conférence Internationale du Conseil Pontifical pour la Pastorale de la santé, nous tournons notre regard vers le commencement d’une telle tension destinée à caractériser la santé toute la vie durant: le génome humain. Nous le considérons comme l’élément structurel et organisationnel du corps humain en ses dimensions individuelles et héréditaires. Il comporte l’ensemble des gènes, mais va au-delà pour embrasser tous les éléments qui, avec les gènes, constituent l’énergie originelle présente sous forme virtuelle, et signifiant le mystère constitutif de la vie de la personne humaine.
Le thème est très vaste et sujet à nouvelles recherches et découvertes. Nos perspectives sont donc modestes. Nous essaierons de le traiter uniquement sous l’angle spécifique de la santé qui, du reste, est un concept totalisant. Un accent particulier sera mis sur l’aspect thérapeutique.
L’examen va procéder suivant notre méthode devenue désormais familière: partant de la vision du génome humain à la lumière de la Parole de Dieu, l’étude sera menée en trois étapes: Situation actuelle, illumination et action.
Dans le première partie, nous examinerons la situationactuelle de la génétique dans l’ordre suivant: génomique et post-génomique, les erreurs génétiques et les maladies congénitales, les maladies monogéniques, polygéniques et plurifactorielles, la prédisposition au cancer et aux maladies latentes, l’assistance médicale aux malades et leurs familles, le diagnostic des maladies génétiques dans la phase prénatale ou préimplantatoire avant le transfert de l’embryon, le screening génétique des populations, la génothérapie. Seront prises en considération également les perspectives de développement dans le domaine des maladies génétiques selon le point de vue de l’Organisation Mondiale de la santé et, enfin, seront présentés la génétique humaine et son statut juridique international ainsi que la recherche génétique et la coopération internationale.
Dans l’illumination de la réalité considérée dans la première partie par la Parole de Dieu, on va réfléchir sur les thèmes concernant le processus historique de la génétique humaine, la génétique humaine à la lumière de la Parole de Dieu, l’éthique de la génétique médicale, la marche de l’eugénisme libéral et l’éthique de la consultation médicale dans le domaine de la génétique. Dans notre habituel dialogue interreligieux, le regard sera tourné, cette fois-ci, vers l’application des connaissances sur la génétique humaine à partir des points de vue de l’Hébraïsme, de l’Islam, du Bouddhisme, de l’Hindouisme pour conclure avec la génétique selon la post-modernité.
Dans la troisième partie, relative à l’Agir, seront traités les thèmes ci-après: génétique et nouvelle culture, la vision pastorale de la recherche génétique, la génétique médicale et les comités d’éthique dans les hôpitaux, le droit et la génétique, la société et les maladies génétiques, l’économie et la génétique, l’éducation et l’aggiornamento des agents pastoraux sur la génétique et, en conclusion, la prévention des maladies génétiques du point de vue pastoral.
Les personnes interpellées pour traiter les thèmes énoncés ci-dessus sont principalement des spécialistes hautement qualifiées en leurs domaines respectifs et proviennent des parties du monde assez éloignées. Elles ont été invitées expressément dans un cadre interdisciplinaire en vue de créer une ambiance propice à un débat de haut niveau, à la fois utile et capable d’apporter une solide contribution à l’orientation à notre monde d’aujourd’hui sur un sujet qui laisse déjà entrevoir l’éclosion d’un futur imminent.
